Clothing and Accessories

History Collection
Description
The Clothing Collection documents the wide variety of garments and accessories worn by people of all ages, genders, and social classes in West Michigan. The Collection consists of mostly American women's, men's, and children's items that date from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. The majority of the garments are women’s evening and formal dresses that were worn by middle-class women between the early 1890s and late 1920s. The women’s garments also include approximately 150 wedding dresses, with the earliest dating from the 1840s. The men's clothing is more limited in scope with the majority of garments being either military uniforms or formal wear. There are examples of uniforms from the Civil War to Desert Storm and functional dress such as sportswear and workwear that were worn by both men and women. Childrenswear and accessories are also part of this Collection. This Collection was cataloged and photographed as part of a grant funded through the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) in 2016-2018.
