Description
The 59th New York Infantry was organized from August to October 1861. The recruits came primarily from New York City and upstate New York with 2 companies from Ohio. The original Colonel was William Tidball. The regiment joined the army of the Potomac's 2nd Corps. in July of 1862. The unit was involved in most of the major Eastern theater battles including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and Appomattox. There are regimental monuments at Antietam and Gettysburg. Many of the photos in this collection are labeled on the reverse "Property of H.N. Hamilton" who was a member of the 59th. Collection consists of 43 identified and 8 un-identified CDV photographs.
