Description

Gertrude L. Smith Irwin was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on January 28th, 1927. She married Dudley Irwin on September 4th, 1945 in Big Rapids, Michigan, and together, they had four children. In 1951 at the age of 24, Gertrude contracted polio and survived several months in an iron lung. After six months of rehabilitation at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation in Warm Springs, Georgia, she regained full function of her body with the exception of her left leg. At the age of 94, Gertrude passed away in Allendale, Michigan on November 17th, 2021.
