1852 – 1986
Houseman's was founded in 1852 by German Jewish immigrant cousins Julius and Jospeh Houseman.  The extremely long-lived clothing store had a presence in downtown Grand Rapids until 1986, when it finally went out of business.  The store was well known for its extenisve selection of men's clothing in its early days, they only started carrying women's lines in 1927.  An early partner in the business was Abraham May, who eventually opened his own clothing store, May's, which competed with Houseman's.
