Description:

This black and white photograph is pasted onto a piece of gray cardboard and depicts a young Ottawa girl holding corn cobs while standing in a field. A caption below the photo reads “Ottawa Indian Girl on an Omena Farm, Leelanau Co.”.

The area encompassing Leelanau County in Michigan was ceded by the Ottawa and Chippewa in the 1836 Treaty of Washington. Leelanau County was organized in 1836. Omena is a small community in Leelanau County, established in 1852 when the Reverend Peter Daughtery relocated the "Old Mission" Indian mission to its new location and became the "New Mission."
