Vase, Terra Cotta

Identifier:
113425
Description:
Clay vase with gently sloped shoulder and ornate neck. A large strap handle is attached to each side of the object, and it is finished in green glaze. Several narrow bands are incised around the upper portion of the vase.;Although the object's source is unknown, it is described as being from "ancient Arabia" in the museum's accession files and ledger. Because a variety of items were purchased along with the object, its date cannot be determined from others bought at the same auction. It is almost certainly not--as described elsewhere in museum records, truly Babylonian.;The vase was originally purchased at the October 13-15, 1927 auction at American Art Galleries, New York. The item was listed with PMGR objects 113424 and 113426 as one group in the auction catalogue.
