Game Boy, Super Mario Land Game

Identifier:
2010.38.8
Description:
This accession consists of a Nintendo Game Boy hand held gaming unit, three games (Tetris, Kirby's Dream Land, and Super Mario Land), two instruction booklets, a connection cable, and a case to hold it all.;The Game Boy was neither the first, nor the most advanced hand held gaming system available during the 1990s, but it was far and away the most successful. It low retail price (about $90) and the ability to play for many hours using only 4 AA batteries gave the Nintendo unit a heads up against its competition. During the lifetime of the device, more than 118 million were sold. The Game was not without its criticisms, notably its relatively low end hardware and monochrome screen may not have satisfied those determined to play the latest games with the best graphics. However, Nintendo's system appealed to millions of casual gamers who picked the system up and played it during long car trips, in bed at night, or clandestinely at work or school. Nintendo's ability to market the system to this wider audience ensured the Game Boy's success and its place as an iconic piece of technology and recreation history.
