Research Equipment, Pipette System
Identifier:
2010.49.3
Description:
This pipette system consists of a handle with two trigger buttons for drawing and extracting liquids, as well as 3 pipette attachments of various sizes and measurements. The handle is gray plastic and the pipette tips are each long plastic cylinders.;This equipment was used in the VAI laboratory of Dr. Jeff MacKeigan, who studies the genes and enzymes that promote cell survival and that, when mutated, may lead to the development of cancer.;These items were collected as part of an initiative to document the healthcare and life sciences industry in West Michigan. They were originally part of a small West Michigan Medical exhibit which complemented Bodies Revealed in 2010-2011.;Grand Rapids made a giant leap forward as a center for medical research with the founding of the Van Andel Institute in 1996. Their facility on Michigan Street served as an anchor for the "Medical Mile" which now includes Spectrum Health's Butterworth Hospital, Meijer Heart Center, Helen DeVos Children's Hospital and Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion, as well as the GVSU Cook-DeVos Center for Sciences and the brand new MSU Secchia Center. In recent years, the VAI has increased its focus on "translational research", expanding collaborations with area hospitals in order to have a quicker, more direct impact on disease.
