The West Michigan Quilters' Guild is a non-profit organization that provides a fellowship for those who have a love for quilting. It was formed in 1977 to promote quilting, meet fellow area quilters, and share tips and ideas. Their primary goals are to preserve the art and history of quilt making, educate and promote tradition through programs and lectures, and provide an extensive amount of support to the community. The Guild's first Charity Quilt Show was held in 1980 and has occurred biennially since. Held in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area, the show displays fine handmade quilts for the public to view. The event acts as their primary fundraising effort and helped form the Guild's program "The Tie that Binds" which benefits families who have babies in the Spectrum Hospital Neonatal Unit. The guild donates to several charities and supports community projects such as Santa Clause Girls and area hospices of West Michigan. Beginning as a small group of thirty-five members, the guild has since swelled to over five hundred. Member meetings are bi-monthly and provide classes and workshops, guest speakers, and volunteer opportunities. The Guild has a working relationship with many West Michigan museums, including the Grand Rapids Public Museum, and has assisted them in the preservation and growth of their quilt collections, helped plan exhibitions, and promoted special quilt events.
