They were a fashion accessory that was symbolic of upper-class standing, representing gentility and respectability. It was expected that the working class had more labored looking hands and so as the practice of wearing gloves became more widespread, they were used to enhance class standing by concealing one's hard-worked hands. As gloves were more commonly being worn by women across the different classes, details surrounding the glove such as the fit, cleanliness, quality and fabric became more important to defining social heirarcy.
