Furniture Industry Archives
Photographs ➔ Photograph, Swaim Manufacturing Co., Furniture Showroom

A photographic print provided by the editors of Furniture Fashion News, a publication in High Point, North Carolina. The prints and newspaper were sent to other editors directly involved in related publications for the Home Furnishings Industry. These publicity materials reflect the Southern Furniture Market (now called High Point Market), a furniture industry trade show that begun in 1921. The Grand Rapids Public Museum has a small collection of ephemeral material related to the Southern Market. At a time when the Grand Rapids Furniture Market began declining (1950s), other national markets such as those in High Point and Chicago, maintained strong attendance. Several similarities and differences can be seen in marketing tactics among the various furniture markets held in other cities. In 1965, with ever-declining numbers of exhibitors and buyers, the Grand Rapids Furniture Market Association discontinued the exhibition in Grand Rapids. Remaining furniture companies moved their showrooms to the exhibition buildings of High Point.
