This small piece of whale vertebrae was found on a beach on the Gulf of California in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico in 2017 by the donors. There are several different types of whales that visit the area including fin whales, gray whales and killer whales; this is likely from one of these species. Though requiring careful handling, this specimen is an excellent example for hands-on educational programs demonstrating the lightweight, porous material and intricate shapes of whale vertebrae.
