Black and white photograph of a 2-8-2 New York Central Railroad locomotive, numbered 2029. The train is positioned next to what is probably a coaling tower.

The New York Central Railroad operated from 1853 - 1968, when it merged with the Pennsylvania Railroad and shortly thereafter filed for bankruptcy. In the aftermath of the bankruptcy filing the company’s assets were broken up and redistributed through successive restructurings. The New York Central system served most of the northeastern United States, including but not limited to New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Massachusetts.
