Chinese lanterns are often used in celebrations and festivals in Asia, especially in association with the Chinese New Year. There are a number of varieties, ranging from types meant to be hanged and some meant to be released to float up into the night sky. Though traditionally made of paper, this example is made out of felt fabric and features a red body with gold characters. In some Chinese traditions, the color red is associated with joy and good fortune.
