This log-marking hammer has a wood handle and a cast iron head with the letters AF in relief. Logging was a popular trade in the 19th century and in order to tell which logs belonged to which company, each one would be marked with a hammer such as this to prove ownership. Each company's hammers featured unique letters or designs to help distinguish them from others.
