Matching dagger and sheath. The dagger has a very wide, spade-shaped blade and round wood handle. The sheath is made from two wood slats wrapped in leather.;This is a quality example of its type. Several people groups of the Congo River are known for manufacturing unusually shaped blades, some of which were functional and often used as throwing knives, while others were merely ornamental. The objects were collected by the donor while a missionary in the Belgian Congo, from 1922-1925. They were made by members of the Pende ethnic group, a Bantu people that live in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo.
