Description:
Brown mugs with handle; with carved geometrical line design.;The geometric designs are characteristic of raffia textiles from people groups of the modern Democratic People's Republic of Congo. Possibly made for export. Identified by Raymond Silverman, Professor of History, Department of the History of Art, University of Michigan--Ann Arbor; tel: 734.615.9847.;Richard B. Crowe donated several items from Egypt, Africa, and South America as part of Accession 4821. They were supposedly collected by a Dr. Robert B. Myers, a Baptist minister, in 1909. He is said to have traveled "1000 miles up the Congo -- 800 up Niger River". It is possible that Niger is a misunderstanding or mistake for "Nile.";The geometric designs are very similar to those found on raffia textiles made by people groups of the modern Democratic Republic of Congo.
