Flag

Comments and Tags

This flag, with 36 stars, only served the United States only two years (1865-1867) during the Presidency of Andrew Johnson, after the admission of Nevada to the Union. The flag was donated by Dr. and Mrs. Orville Barton. Dr. Barton practiced dentistry in Grand Rapids in the early twentieth century. It is unknown how that the Bartons received this flag. The flag is slightly discolored, but otherwise well preserved and intact. Nothing is known about the history of the flag. During the time this flag was made President Andrew Johnson was dealing with the assassination of his predecessor Abraham Lincoln, the reunification of the Union, and how to deal with former slaves integrating into society. Nevada was admitted to Union eight days before the 1864 Presidential Election to help President Lincoln win the 1864 Presidential Election. This flag served the United States until Nebraska was admitted to the Union in 1867. Joseph McCarthy, 11/13/2017
