Samplers ➔ Embroidery, Flowers In Blue And Yellow, Motto - 'Arbeit Macht Das Leben Süß'

Identifier:
145253
Description:
This sampler is completed on perforated paper, also known as punch paper, which is a lightweight cardboard with evenly spaced holes that imitate an embroidery canvas. This method of embroidery started in 1820 as plain sheets but hit its peak in 1870 with a new printing process that allowed for pre-printed designs and mottoes on the paper. This piece is an example of the pre-printed embroidery method. The ink can be seen as a very faint blue color throughout the pattern. Pieces of this size were characteristically framed and displayed on the wall. There are flowers stitched onto the punch paper using blue and yellow thread. The motto 'Arbeit macht das Leben Süß' is stitched using shades of red in German. It translates to 'Work makes life sweet' in English. These types of phrases were used to inspire "proper" thoughts and behaviors among its readers. It is simply a moral reminder.
