This black bonnet is made of silk. During the early 19th century bonnets were worn both indoors and outdoors. This bonnet would have been worn outside of the home. This bonnet has the same simplicity and style of outer bonnets worn by conservative Amish and Mennonite women. Usually, the outer bonnets worn by Amish and Mennonite women were black and signified obedience to Biblical commands. It is an excellent representation of the styles of bonnets worn by religious women in the early 19th century.
