Description:
This Model 20-T, the only known surviving example of a Lorraine Automobile, is a rare reminder that more than furniture was made in the Furniture City.

The Lorraine Motors Corporation was one of several Grand Rapids Car manufacturers in the early 20th century.  About 250 to 300 Lorraine automobiles were assembled in Grand Rapids each year between 1919 and 1921. The bodies were produced by Ligonier of Ligonier, Indiana.  The engines were made in North Tonawanda, New York, by Herschell-Spillman, the same company that built the GRPM’s carousel.
Lorraines were medium-priced autos.  This 4-door convertible, with a 4 cylinder, 192 cubic inch engine, was listed at $1,425 in 1920.

The GRPM would like to recognize the following for their assistance and contributions to the restoration of the Lorraine:

Exhibit/Program:
Furniture City (1994 – 2013)
Furniture City was one of the signature core exhibits installed at the Grand Rapids Public Museum's new Van Andel Museum Center when it opened in 1994. At approximately 10,000 square feet, the exhibit occupied a significant portion of the museum's second floor and contained hundreds of pieces of Grand Rapids Furniture. The exhibition was accompanied by the authoritative book on the subject, "Grand Rapids Furniture", by GRPM curator Christian Carron. The Furniture City exhibit told a comprehensive story of the Furniture Industry in Grand Rapids, from its origins in the years after the Civil War, up to the present day with office and fixed seating manufacturers like Steelcase and American Seating. The exhibition was significantly reduced in size in 2013 to make room for a new gallery and was closed in 2019.

The Lorraine Motors Corporation existed from 1920-22. The Lorraine was an assembled automobile built in both Grand Rapids and Detroit, Michigan. It succeeded the Hackett after their premises in Grand Rapids were purchased by Lorraine Motors. The vehicle was powered by a four-cylinder Herchell-Spillman engine and was available in both open and closed models. Only a few hundred models were sold. The Last known Lorraine Touring car is on display at the Grand Rapids Public Museum.
