Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Bishop began as a manufacturer and retailer of furniture, both through its retail outlet in downtown Grand Rapids, and through a direct mail-order-consumer catalog. Correspondence from the first decade of the 20th century claimed that Bishop was "the largest exclusive furniture house in the world shipping to the consumer direct." Catalogs from the same period show a range of oak and mahogany tables, chairs, commodes, dressers, couches, and cabinets in Empire Revival, Golden Oak, and Mission styles, but do not distinguish which pieces are made by other Grand Rapids manufacturers. The company later dropped both its manufacturing and mail-order operations, but continues as a home furnishings retailer.
