Armstrong enlisted in Grand Rapids in 1861 and served until 10/31/1864 in Company D of the 1st Michigan Engineers & Mechanics Regiment. Enlisted as a Private he received promotion to Artificer and Quartermaster Sergeant. Back of photo says this was taken at Elk River Tennessee.
