Calkins enlisted at the age of 19 in Grand Rapids Michigan as a Private in 1861. He served in Company B 1st Michigan Engineers & Mechanics until mustered out 11/2/1864. He received promotions to Sergeant Major. 2nd Lieutenant, and ultimately 1st Lieutenant. he returned to Grand Rapids after the war and was active in the G.A.R. ;Label on back reads "T. M. Schleier's Cartes de Visite, photograph gallery, Corner Cherry and Union Streets, Nashville, Tenn."

Thank God for Michigan: Stories from the Civil War
(June 6 2011 – March 29 2015)Thank God for Michigan was an exhibition developed by the GRPM to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. The exhibit featured over 150 artifacts from the GRPM's collection and told the story of the Civil War through the lens of soldiers and civilians from Michigan.
