This metal file cabinet was manufactured by the Metal Office Furniture Company around 1935. It features four drawers with silver pulls and label frames and is painted to look simulate wood. In the early 20th century, offices contained mostly wood furniture, making them fire hazards due to smoking indoors. To make workplaces safer, businesses such as the Metal Office Furniture Company began to manufacture steel furnishings painted to look like wood. This lowered the fire risk while allowing customers to enjoy their "wood" furniture.
This file cabinet was used by Frank Dumond, Director of the Grand Rapids Public Museum when it was located at 54 Jefferson Avenue, Grand Rapids, Michigan.
