Identifier:
1995.1.74
Description:
Braided wig made from dark-colored hair. Eight braids face forward and are bound with green plastic beads, while eight larger braids face backwards and are bound with yellow rubberbands.;The wig was purchased from a local salon to illustrate Nigerian hairstyles for the PMGR's 1989 African-American exhibit in Heritage Hall. However, according to the wig's tag it was actually made in Korea.;This wig was made specifically for inclusion in the 1989 African-Americn exhibit that was in the old Jefferson building Heritage Hall. The wig was purchased locally and a local African-American beautician braided the wig to duplicate the a hairstyle that was used by Africans in Nigeria at that time. Since these were not actual artifacts, they were not accessioned. When the Jefferson building closed and the objects removed from Heritage Hall, the three wigs were given F.I.C numbers.;1) A tag on the interior reads "lura." Material and care information are also printed on the tag. |
