Description:
Two ceramic bowls of a light cream color with floral motifs on the sides. The bowls have a crackled finish.;Identified by Laurie Barnes, Associate Curator, The Detroit Institute of Arts, MI; tel: 313.833.1718.;Most of the early Satsuma ceramics featured a cream colored body with a light yellowish glaze that was crackled. Decoration at the beginning was simple, there was no perspective and only a limited palette. Flowers were a common motif and occasionally the Phoenix or Dragon were depicted. It was not until the second half of the 19th century, under the influence of Arita and Kyoto ceramic artists, did more varied color shades appear as well as the use of perspective.
