National Cash RegisterNational Cash Register was founded in 1884 in Dayton, Ohio when John H. Patterson purchased the National Manufacturing Company and its patents for the first mechanical cash register from James Ritty. The company became known for its rigorous sale methods and business techniques. Patterson also established the first sales training school in 1893.
In 1906, Charles F. Kettering designed the first cash register powered by an electric motor. The Class 1000 register was developed a few years later and was in production for 40 years. The O.K. Credit Authorization system was also developed by Kettering and was used in department stores to verify credit.
During World War I the company manufactured fuses and aircraft instruments and during World War II, it built aero engines, bomb sights, and code-breaking machines such as the American bombe. After the wars, it began developing new computing and communications technology. In 1974, the name was changed to NCR Corporation. Frances Rudell Moyer (donor)
