Ceremonial Artifacts ➔ Scarab Cast

Identifier:
4297
Description:
Brown clay cast of a dung beetle which is known as a Heart Scarab. The scarab was considered sacred. A cast or carving of a scarabaeid beetle or dung beetle was worn around the neck, mounted in a ring or placed in or on the wrappings of a mummy. One reason for placing the scarab on the chest of a mummy was to silence the accusing voice of the heart on the day of judgment. This insect was linked to RA the sun-god because the practice of the egg laying female represented that of RA rolling the sun disk across the sky. Millions of scarabs were made from several different materials like clay and stone. Often inscriptions were found on the underside of the scarab which indicated a king's titles.
