Description:
There are thirty 10 1/2" blocks each made from a combination of squares of a colored or print fabric and squares and triangles of solid white. There is a 3"wide solid white cotton sashing between each block, and matching 2 1/2" wide border. The 3/8" binding is sewn to the front then brought to the back. 11 of the 30 blocks are signed in ink in the center; the remainder are blank.;Various names, dates and locations written in ink on 11 of the quilt blocks: 1) Frankie Covell, Forest [Bend], Michigan 1874; 2) Lottie Covell, Forest [Bend], Walker; 3) Bessie Bennett, Grand Rapids, Mich 1874; 4) [Callie] C. Ream; 5) Nellie Livingstonl Grand Rapids, Michigan; 6) Sarah Covell, Walker Center, Michigan, 1874; 7) Frank B. Covell, Grand Rapids, Michigan; 8) Bell or Nell Hogadone, Walker Center; 9) Nelllie Livingston, Grand Rapids, Michigan ; 10) Shellie Covell, Grand Rapids, Michigan; and 11) Emma Covell, Walker Center, Michgan, 1874;This is an Album or Friendship quilt made in the 1870s and signed by members of families that were significant in the settling of the west side of Grand Rapids and Walker. These family names include Covell and Livingston. This quilt was probably made as a friendship or wedding gift. The donor's grandmother, Sarah Covell, may have either made the quilt or it was made for her.
