Identifier:
2004.15.1
Description:
Archival Collection #135 - John Arsulowicz, Jr. collection consists of three dimensional artifacts, photographs, paintings, newspapers, paper records and other assorted items assembled by John Arsulowicz, Jr. The objects in this collection pertain to the Arsulowicz family and Arsulowicz family businesses. Additional materials related to the Polish background of the Arsulowicz family have been incorporated into the Grand Rapids Polish American Archival Collection #127.

The John Arsulowicz, Archival Collection was assembled over a period of years. A former president of the Polish Heritage Society and a well-known figure in the community, John amassed hundreds of 19th and 20th century photographs, scrapbooks, badges, documents, newspapers, artwork, business records and advertisements, musical instruments, clerical vestments, and religious symbols from his own family and from many other Polish-Americans in Grand Rapids.

Mr. Arsulowicz was a first-generation Polish-American who grew up on the west side in Grand Rapids. His father and mother came from a small town in Poland in the early 1900s. John started his own business in the 1930s, the Arsulowicz Funeral Parlor, on Stocking Street. The business catered primarily to Polish and German families who lived in the area. Advertising giveaways such as calendars were available in both Polish and English. The funeral business grew and the brothers opened a second home on east Michigan Street near the Polish-American parish of St. Isidores.
