Description:
Black and white photograph shows two two-story wood clapboard houses connected together at the sides by a one-story addition. n between them. There is also a sign on posts set between the two buildings that says "Brown's Chapel - Funeral Home.";Photograph shows the exterior of the buildings of Brown's Funeral Home in the 1950's. Milo Brown was one of the first African-Americans to own a funeral parlor in Grand Rapids and cater to African-American clientel. He opened his first home at 25 Sycamore in 1925. In 1928 he purchased a second location at 633 Jefferson. By 1932 he closed the Sycamore location and consolidated into a building at 627 Jefferson, the location shown in this photo. Brown operated the home until he died in 1986. The home is still owned by an African-American and is still in business as of 2005.;Originals lent to the Museum by the current owners of Brown Funeral Parlor so copies could be made.
