Archival Collections ➔ Archival Collection #151 - Sanela Sprecic

Identifier:
2005.44.1
Description:
This collection includes items from two segments of the donor's life. They all relate to the importance of language in her life. As an immigrant from Bosnia in 1997, Sanela Sprecic brought with her items written in her native language when she came to America. In Grand Rapids, she helped establish a Bosnian language newspaper. Items that she brought from home, and relating to the newspaper, reflect her desire to continue the use of her language as a means of preserving her culture. Her English as a second language students at East Kentwood High School, Freshman Campus, created other items in the collection. They include flags, reports, and items that they colored to decorate the walls of their classroom. While created by youth from around the world, they are all written in their adopted language of English. As their teacher, Ms. Sprecic both teaches pride in where they came from and helps them adjust to living in American society.
