Description:
Bronze medal consisted of a bronze arrow cross with flames between each arm and a relief Polish falcon in the center. Over the flames are four place names, clockwise from upper left: SZAMPANJA, LWOW, POMORZE, and WOLYN. The word AMERYKI appears across the horizontal section of the cross, while the words SWOIM/ZOLNIERZOM/Z and OSWOBO/DZONA/POLSKA appear above and below the falcon, respectively. A half-red, half-white ribbon is woven through four holes in the medal.;The Cross of Polish Soldiers from America was instituted by order of Jozef Pilsudski in 1920, in order to honor the many Polish immigrants to the USA and Canada that volunteered to return to Europe to serve during the creation of the Second Polish Republic after World War I. In 1930 the medal was reissued as a smaller gilt cross, with each arm covered in white enamel.;This medal is part of a dress uniform worn by Corporal Vincent Zakarzecki while serving in Italy, France, and Poland under General Joseph Haller in a unit of Polish-American immigrants. Corporal Zackarzecki, like others of his unit, volunteered to fight for the emerging Polish Republic after WWI.;SZAMPANIA (Champagne), LWOW, WOLYN, and POMORZE (Pomerania) are four place names.
