Certificate appointing Robert Hays "Gent"(1742 - 1819) as a "second lieutenant of a company of foot in the 3d Batt of Associators in the County of Northampton"
Certificate in printed form, completed in manuscript, and signed by John Morton (1724 - April 1, 1777), speaker of the Pennsylvania Assembly and one of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. Mr. Morton was the first signer to die, and thus, documents signed by him after the signing, are somewhat rare.
Helen Estelle Hayes and Nellie Myra Hayes, donors, were sisters, Grand Rapids residents, and daughters of Uriah S. Hayes (1843 - 1910). Nellie Hayes was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Jim was honored to have been appointed by Gov. Milliken to the Board of Forensic Polygraph Examiners and by the GR mayor to the GR Historical Commission. Additionally, Jim served as President of the Command Officers Bargaining Unit at the Kent County Sheriff's Department and Vice President of the GR Historical Society. Along with his dedicated service to GRPM Jim was also a member of the Board of Kent County Employees Credit Union, the Kent County Pension Board, the Art Advisory Committee for Butterworth Hospital, the Acquisitions Committee at the Grand Rapids Art Museum and the GVSU Gordon Gallery Advisory Committee.
