Description:
This is a contract or bill of sale dated July 20, 1848. It is for the purchase of seven slaves. The seller was Andre Marchesseau of New Orleans, Lousiana and the buyer was Jean Francois Beugnot also of New Orleans. It is written in French and has been translated. The purchase is for the following:
"Mary, mulatto woman, aged about 18 years, acquired by the seller from Thomas E. Boswell, by private act, dated the 9th October 1847 and here annexed for reference the said slave is sold with her son, aged 5 months for the sum of 1000 piastres."
"Betsy,____, aged about 45 years, acquired from the estate of Madame L.R. Gaiennie, by act, on the 20th April 1847, in the presence of Joseph Cuvillier, notary in this city; for the sum of 500 piastres."
"Nelly,____, aged 16 years, acquired from Ferdinan Graf, by act dated 25 February 1848, in the percent of John E. Holland, notary in this city; for the sum of 550 piastres."
"Cecilia or Pleasant_____, aged about 18 years, acquired by J. Wilson, by act, dated the 5th July 1848, in the presence of E. Barnett, notary; for the sum of 750 piastres."
Sarah, negro woman, aged 21 years, acquired from Mr. J. Hall, by act dated 1 May 1848, in the presence of John E. Holland, notary; for the sum of 600 piastres."
Allen, negro man, aged 35, acquired from the estate of T.N. Boylan, by act, dated the 4th February 1847 in the presence of A.D. Doriocourt, then notary in this city; for the sum of 700 piastres.
