Archival Collections ➔ Archival Collection #202 - Salling-Hanson Lumber Co.
Identifier:
2006.3.1
Description:
This archival collection contains three separate books related to the Salling-Hanson Lumber Company of Grayling. The first is a large brown and black leather covered ledger book that contains information about the amount of type of trees growing in plots of land owned by the company. A person called a timber cruiser would go out to the plot to access the trees to help the company decide if that plot should be harvested. The information the cruiser gathered was recorded in this book. The record dates span from 1888 through 1940. The other two volumes have fake embossed black leather covers and black paper pages. Each page contains a black and white photograph on it. There is a typewritten list in the back that explains each photograph. The photos in Volume 1 include a pictorial record of the buildings, machinery, operations and personnel of the Salling-Hanson lumbering company in Grayling; homes and other buildings from the town of Grayling, Michigan and several images of the well known Michigan Native American David Shoppenagon. Volume 2 includes photos of the Johannesburg operation of Salling-Hanson and images of the town.
A full listing of the contents of this collection can be found in the Finding Aid that is attached to the media section of this catalog entry.;This collection is good for reseraching and documenting the timbering and lumbering business in Michigan. It also has great photographs of a Native American who settled in Grayling in the 19870s and lived there until 1911.;The donor's great grandfather, Ernst Salling, started the Lumber company with Rasmus Hanson in the mid 1880s. The books in this collection were passed through the family.
