Wood Bar

Identifier:
2006.33.1
Description:
Free standing, kidney shaped bar has a veneered curved wood front. The shaped counter is covered in a false veneer. The inside of the bar has one shelf running the length of the bar and a small drawer beneath the shelf.;This bar was orignally in the Ideal Tavern located at 579 Stocking Street. It was owned by John Arsulowicz, the father of the owners of the Arsulowicz Funeral Parlor next door. According to a search of city directories the Ideal opened in 1939 and was in this location until 1961. At that time it was torn down becasue the funeral home was expanding.;The donor called and said they had just purchased the home at 932 Van Buren and that there was a bar in the basement that they did not want to keep. The donor stated that the real estate agent told them the bar had come from a tavern that was orignally located next to the Arsulowicz Brothers Funeral Parlor on Stocking Avenue and was removed when the tavern was torn down for the Funeral Parlor expansion. From research done in the Grand Rapids city directories, a tavern located at 579 Stocking, is first listed in 1936. The name of the tavern was The Ideal. It was run by John J. Arsulowicz, the father of the funeral parlor Arsulowicz brothers. The tavern is listed at this same location until 1960/61. In 1962 John J. Arsulowicz is isted as being at the Holiday Bar at 861 5th Street. About that time the Arsulowicz Brothers Funeral Parlor was expanding and the tavern was probably town down to make way for the Funeral Parlor expansion. The bar was probably removed at that time but it is not known if it was immdeiately put into the basement of 932 Van Buren, or if it was acquired at a later date.
