Lacquered box, rectangular shaped with squared off corners on the box and lid; red stained interior; outer box and lid are rosewood colored and lacquered giving it a very shiny finish; underneath the lid are two narrow strips of wood at each corner, on the short side, that fit down into the box, they are painted black. There are splits and cracks at all four corners. On top of the box lid is a swirled circular design in gray. a: box; b: lid

Marilyn Merdzinski was one of the Grand Rapids Public Museum's most influential and longest-serving employees. She started her career at the GRPM just out of college in 1977 and retired 37 years later in 2015. During her tenure at the GRPM she held numerous leadership positions in the Collections Department, eventually retiring as the Vice President of Collections. Among her numerous accomplishments are stewarding the museum's collections safely through several moves, helping to establish the conceptual framework for the new Van Andel Museum Center, becoming a national leader on NAGPRA issues, and helping to found the Museum School.
