Identifier:
2008.10.1
Description:
Small red cotton cloth strawberry shape with four green felt leaves on top and a narrow green ribbon tie. It is filled with four sacred herbs - cedar, sage, tobacco and sweet grass.

Prayer ties are small bundles containing sacred herbs. Native Americans who follow traditional ways use prayer ties for a variety of reasons. Some people give prayer ties to say thank you. Others offer them to cement an agreement. Still others use them as prayers to Gitchi Manito (God) to clear the path for a loved one after that person crosses (dies). Prayer ties may contain a prayer or a blessing for a living person. They may also be a means of communicating with ancestors.
