The GRPM intends to actively interpret the role of this type of business in the daily lives of people in our community. Stores like Herpolsheimer's, Wurzburg's, and Stekatee's had downtown locations which anchored a centralized shopping district in the mid-twentieth century. As these stores began to move to the suburbs or go out of business, Grand Rapids' urban core experienced a period of sharp decline which lasted for several decades.
