Description:
Coin set from the 50 State Commemorative Quarter Program (also known as the Statehood Quarter Program), a circulation coin program consisting of Washington quarters with 50 unique reverse designs, each one commemorating a different state of the Union. The quarters are displayed in a hard green folder which has all the State names and dates written next to the quarters. They are contained in the folder each displaying the front design of the coins.;The Museum's collection has a very complete run of US general circulation coins up to the 1980s. This set helps keep the collection current. From 1999 through 2008 the US Mint produced a series of 50 quarters to commemorate all 50 states in the country. Released to the public at the rate of 5 different quarters per year for 10 years, the coins were issued in the same order the states enter the Union, or in the case of the thirteen original colonies, in the order they ratified the Constitution. The reverse design for each state was proposed by the states to the Secretary of the Treasury and then produced by US Mint engravers. This program was conceived as a means of creating a new generation of coin collectors. The 50 State Quarters program became the most successful numismatic program in history, with roughly half of the U.S. population collecting the coins, either in casual manner or as a serious pursuit. The U.S. federal government so far has made additional profits of $3.0 billion from collectors taking the coins out of circulation.;Front reads: Fifty State Commemorative Quarters 1999-2008. The front has a sticker that reads: $50.00.
