Doll, Mannequin
Identifier:
2012.34.1
Description:
Mannequin doll used during WWII during fabric shortages to sell clothing. Set includes a mannequin doll dressed in a WWII Navy Wave uniform, trunk for storage of clothing that when it opens up it looks like a wardrobe with a spot to hang the clothing and drawers. There are several different clothing items that go with the doll.;The mannequin doll is by doll maker Margit Nilson. The doll is about 30" tall and is dressed in what appears to be a Navy WAVE uniform. She has a label on her back identifying the artist. The doll appears to be made of painted plaster or some similar material. The doll also comes with a traveling trunk, complete with stickers from many NY hotels, filled with other outfits. The donor received the doll from her parents as a gift in 1944 or 1945. It was purchased at a store called Bleazbys in Birmingham, Michigan. Bleazby’s sold unique gifts like this doll and her trunk, but the initial purpose of Margit Nilson’s miniature mannequins was to display clothing patterns that used less material than full-sized mannequins. This was especially important when there were material shortages during WWII.;Doll label: Margit Nilson
