Bustle

Identifier:
2014.26.5
Description:
This bustle was an undergarment worn by women in the 1880s to create fullness in the back of a skirt. Most were built of metal wire frames and like this example, covered in a basic cotton muslin fabric. The bustle would be worn overtop of the other undergarments such as the chemise and corset and tied around the waist. Bustles came in all shapes and sizes to create this sculpted silhouette. The sheer variety of design that was available make the bustle an interesting item of women's wear from this period.
