Transportation ➔ Travel Trailer, Hayes Crusader
Identifier:
2018.41.1
Description:
Leave it all behind! Go in yacht-like luxury. The nation is at your door - the cool North Woods in summer, the balmy air and healthful sunshine of Florida and California in winter - all for less than humdrum home life now costs you.
These words from a Hayes promotional brochure perfectly describe the allure the travel trailer has for many Americans. By the late 1930s, America was already well on its way to becoming a car culture and trailers like these were truly yachts of the highways. Offering a blend of style, safety, and comfort, the Hayes trailers produced in Grand Rapids took advantage of new manufacturing techniques and featured all steel frames that were significantly more durable than earlier wooden models. Hayes also prided itself on its high quality interiors built by “Furniture City craftsmen”. This particular trailer was discovered by a local collector, Ken Faber, in California in 2004 and restored at his shop here in Wyoming, MI with the help of woodworker James Larimore and metal fabricators Roger Heyer and Gerritt Strickwerda.
