Ship's Foghorn

Identifier:
2019.31.1
Description:
This plunging-style brass ship's foghorn was made by Tyfon Sweden in the early 20th century. A marine foghorn gives an audible signal to warn vessels of dangers, hazards and the presence of other vessels in fog conditions. The exterior of this horn is in good condition, however, the interior workings require new gaskets so it will be operational again. This is an example of a horn that would have been commonly used on ships in the Great Lakes region in the early 20th century.
