This .58 caliber rifle musket is a Springfield Model 1863 Type II, also known as Model 1864 and was manufactured by the Springfield Armory. It belonged to Marinus Mulder who served in Company I, 25th Michigan Volunteer Infantry in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Mulder, from Holland, Michigan, enlisted in 1865 and served until the end of the war.
The Model 1863 Springfield was considered a variant of the Model 1861, which was the most commonly used firearm during the American Civil War. This example has “1864” and “U.S. Springfield” engraved on the lock plate, with an eagle and shield motif between the two. The buttplate tang is marked “U.S.” and the breech is marked “VP” with an eagle head. The name M. Mulder is hand-carved into the right side of the stock.
This rifle musket is accompanied by a socket bayonet marked “US” and an M1907 leather sling. The items were donated by the Peter C. and Emajean Cook Foundation, an organization established in 1987 to ensure the philanthropic legacy of Peter and Emajean Cook would live on.
