Description:
A walnut framed original print of the Green River by Thomas Moran, issued by The Aldine. The Aldine was published from 1868 until 1879 as “the art journal of America.” Within its pages were fine commissioned images by such famous artists as Thomas Moran. Like other magazines of the period, The Aldine issued some separate prints as premiums for subscribers, including two fine chromolithographs after Moran that were issued in 1874. One scene was of the West (“The Cliffs of Green River”) and one of the West (“White Mountains.”) In the promotion for the prints, The Aldine‘s editors stated that the “chromos are each worked from thirty distinct plates, and are in size (12 x 16) and appearance exact facsimiles of the originals.”
On the backing cardboard is a label printed: From James Sutton & Co.58 Maiden Lane, New York/ "Aldine" Chromos, 1874. The label is further inscribed by hand in ink: Mr. Theo B. Stocking/#318 7 St. Grand Rapids, Mich. Mr. Stocking's birth and death dates are 1849-1876.
A descriptive orange-colored label from the Aldine Company is also affixed on the verso.

Mary Widdicomb Joass was born in Grand Rapids on September 24, 1872. Her family had established the Widdicomb Furniture Company in 1858, which later became Widdicomb Brothers and Richards, among its other entities. The Widdicomb Company went out of business in 2002, although Widdicomb designs are still manufactured under the Gustav Stickley Company, which acquired those rights in 2002.
Mary Widdicomb married John Joass in 1914. She passed away in Grand Rapids in 1944. The GRPM has a handwritten genealogy of her family's history, starting with the birth of her great grandfather Billius Stocking, who was born in 1779. James A. Straub (identified by)

Jim StraubJames A. Straub was a Collections department volunteer and Collection Committee Member at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, offering his services as an art historian. Among his many life accomplishments were his family, and serving in the United States Marine Corps, including a 13-month tour of duty in Vietnam. His list of achievements include 27 years as Detective Lieutenant from the Kent County Sheriff's Department, Original Catalogue Director of the Mathias Alten Catalogue Raisonne, and providing significant contributions to the book, Mathias Alten: Journey of an American Painter.
Jim was honored to have been appointed by Gov. Milliken to the Board of Forensic Polygraph Examiners and by the GR mayor to the GR Historical Commission. Additionally, Jim served as President of the Command Officers Bargaining Unit at the Kent County Sheriff's Department and Vice President of the GR Historical Society. Along with his dedicated service to GRPM Jim was also a member of the Board of Kent County Employees Credit Union, the Kent County Pension Board, the Art Advisory Committee for Butterworth Hospital, the Acquisitions Committee at the Grand Rapids Art Museum and the GVSU Gordon Gallery Advisory Committee.
