Identifier:
138833
Description:
Wide, short, cotton tapestry depicting a large central winged goddess with the body of a scarab and hovering over two flowers. The figure is surrounded on either side by mirror images of a sphinx, two pyramids, an obelisk, and a large palm tree. Three hieroglyphs appear over the pyramids on either side, and also mirror each other.;The item is almost certainly made for export. The central winged goddess is possibly Ma'at; in Egyptian mythology, she represented law or righteousness. However, she was necessarily associated with the scarab, a type of beetle held sacred by ancient Egyptians, with strong associations to death rituals.;The piece was donated in 1967. The recrod indicates that the donor stated she was a missionary nurse in N. Africa and Egypt but did not give dates.
