Samplers ➔ Sampler

Identifier:
121018
Description:
This sampler was most likely created by a young woman as a demonstration or test of her skill in needlework. Although unfinished, it displays the characteristics of many samplers. There are numbers and the alphabet stitched onto the top in both upper and lower cases with a small border separating each line. The entire piece is enclosed in a more unusual decorative border which at the top it can be noticed she started to fill it in with a light blue. She used a silk twisted thread at 37 threads to an inch and was stitched on a bleached and hemmed linen square. The overall soft coloring of the piece suggests that it was started in the early 1800's. Eventhough this piece was not completed it would have served as a resource for lettering on future embroidery pieces.
